Most of people think that booking a hotel room is pretty easy today. Chose a city or any destination, pick a date, pay it online, received hotel voucher, and done! But wait.

There are some big small but fatal mistake you could make and ruin your entire holiday. When it comes to book a hotel room, bad online travel agent, submitting wrong data, and not knowing what you should expect could give extra headache for you.

Thinking that you will always get the best room available

Fun fact! Even with the same features, not all room is created equal. Some rooms have better view than the others. It’s fairly common practice for hotels to give guests room with better view to whom book via hotel website and one that has loyalty card. Booking via online travel agencies could lead you to get the whatever room that is left.

The solution:
If getting the best possible room is important for you, book through hotel website probably a way to go. But we all know when online travel agencies price is so low that we can’t ignore it. In that case, you can ask the hotel for specific requirement that match your need.

Expecting every requests to be guaranteed. It’s not.

In most of booking platform today, you can put special request such smoking room, high level room, and so on. However, if you read the fine print in terms of service, most hotels never guarantee any of these request will be fulfilled.

The solution:
They said that low expectation is key of happiness. It’s true. But if you have really minimum facilities in your room, eventually you will need something that is not there. You need to know that generally most hotels will try to fulfill your demands. In the case when you’re placed in double bedroom but you really want have to space between you and your partner, you can always ask the front desk. Do this politely and you will get better result. To take further precaution, you also can call the hotel before your arrival and confirm availability of your request.

Booking at the wrong time. It happens.

If you are a procrastinator like me, you will wait until last minute before you finally book a room. Even if you know that last minute action always lead to more money to spend. Hotel rates can spike up in last days. Even worse, the hotel you wanted is full and you have to spend more out of your budget range. On the other side, booking a room way too early will cost more money that it should.

The solution:
No real easy answer for this case. To know what is the best time to book a hotel room remain a mystery. But don’t be sad, you can have this general rule: for popular destinations, booking more than 21 days ahead of your arrival is a big no. You will be in a risk for jacked up prices. The best you can do is to check price at least 40 days ahead and monitor the price. If it’s going up, then book.
