Online Travel Agencies (OTAs) are important business partners and play a key role in the hotel industry. Giving hotels increased online visibility by connecting you to the global audience. Resulting in increased number of bookings and boosting profits. Marketing the hotel has been made easier by showing the available rooms at any given point of time.

With more than 4,000 OTAs to choose from in the market, hoteliers should understand that each OTA works on a different booking model. It is important to strategize and determine the best OTA partners for the hotel. The following factors will guide you in choosing the right partner for your hotel.

3 Factors to Consider When Choosing an OTA For the Hotel

  1. Research on the Hotel’s Target Market

Determine the main target market and demographics for your hotel as this will play a vital role in choosing the right OTA. Most OTAs are focused on a particular target segment to assist guests in booking faster and smoother. For example, if the hotel caters to Filipinos but is only listed on Gomio.com, a popular OTA for Dutch guests. The hotel will not then be visible to the intended target market.

  1. Consider the Property Type

There are different OTAs specializing in specific hotel property types such as for Bed and Breakfasts, Budget Hotels, Hostels, and so on. This will depend on the category of your hotel including the amenities offered and will impact the decision of selecting the best OTA partner.

For example, Expedia caters to mostly 5-star hotels and budget hotels partnering with them will have a low visibility ranking on it. During a pandemic, domestic travel will be the first one to recover when travel restrictions ease. While many OTAs cater to a global market, selecting one that focuses on a specific region can increase conversions.

  1. Commission Model

Hotels will need to provide commission as part of their agreement with the OTA. Each OTA will have different commission models and best to identify first which OTA best fits your hotel. Then, identify the optimal budget that will be sustainable for your hotel even during the pandemic.

Online Travel Agencies (OTAs) help your property get global visibility, which in turn, can give you a lot of bookings. OTAs influence about 2/3rd of all online bookings, so being seen on the right OTAs will surely make your hotel popular without you even trying.

However, there are over 4,000 OTAs for you to choose from. How do you know which one is the best for your hotel? Should you be in one OTA only or a lot? eZee, our hotel software partner, shares these factors that you need to consider when choosing an OTA that you would partner with.

4 factors you need to consider in choosing the right OTA for your hotel

1. Research on what your target audience uses.

You may be seen on 100 OTAs, but if you are not connected to the right ones, you will still not get bookings. For example, you prefer Filipino guests, but your hotel is listed on Gomio.com, a popular OTA for Dutch guests, you still won’t get bookings. Go for a more local OTA like Booking.com or Agoda if you prefer Filipino guests.

2. Consider your property type.

Some OTAs only cater to a specific type of hotel. For example, Expedia caters to mostly 5-star hotels, so you can’t list your budget hotel there since it will most likely get ignored. ZEN Rooms’ booking website, zenrooms.com, caters to economy to mid-range hotels in the Philippines. If we suit the type of your property, send us an email at [email protected].

3. Commission model

Identify the budget that you set aside for commissions. Is your budget enough to match the amount that the OTA asks for? As long as you don’t lose too much money from commissions, then you’re all set.

4. The account manager

Since you’ve invested a big amount of your budget on an OTA, you want to make sure your hotel is on the right hands. Since your account manager is the direct bridge between you and the OTA, he/she can make or break your hotel online. Determine if the assigned account manager is easy to talk to, can be reached instantly, and understands your needs. This way, if an issue arises or you have inquiries, you can have peace of mind that your account manager has your back.

The pictures of your hotel room that you include in your listing give your potential guests the “first impression” on what kind of service they can expect. If the photos you put in your hotel listing don’t clearly showcase your hotel’s rooms and amenities, guests can’t gauge what your hotel offers. This might drive them away.

According to TripAdvisor, a hotel listing with more than 20 photos is more likely to have more engagement. However, you should not just post random and unstaged photos.

Don’t know how to take good shots of your property? Here are tips on how you can take professional photos of your hotel from our very own In-House Photographer.

1. Stand in the corner of the room when taking photos.

When you take photos from the corner of the room, you can see the whole room properly. Take different photos from all corners so you can properly show each part of the room.

2. Take advantage of natural lighting.

Open the windows in your hotel room so the sunlight illuminates the whole room evenly. However, avoid taking photos between 12 noon to 2 pm since this is when the sunlight is too bright.

3. Just take as many photos as you can.

It’s better to take a lot of photos when you’re already shooting. You can just pick the best ones later. If you take photos at different times and use them in one listing, there will be discrepancies in the appearance of the hotel room which might confuse guests.
