When one hears about Puerto Galera, the first thing that comes to mind is the beach. While it is true that tourists usually come there for an island getaway, there’s more to Puerto Galera than the White Beach. Unknown to many, there are unspoiled and unexplored sites in town. One of these is the Tamaraw Falls.

Located at Barangay Villaflor, Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro, Tamaraw Falls stands at 423 feet and never fails to impress its visitors. It is as tall as a 5-storey building. The waterfall has unique Y-shape dropping waters because of the twin falls merging together. It is also covered with lush greens and facing the mountains. For anyone who needs a break from the sand and saltwater, Tamaraw Falls is the perfect place to be!

Unlike other falls, it is very easy to get to Tamaraw Falls because you don’t need to hike or trek over the mountains or forests to see its beauty. From the highway, you can already see its dramatic waters falling to its pool. But if you want to see it up close, you will need to pay for the Tamaraw Falls entrance fee which is really affordable.

Tamaraw Waterfalls History

The falls got its name from a species of buffalo called “tamaraw” which is endemic in Mindoro. The tamaraw resembles the carabao but it is smaller with shorter horns that grow upward in a “V” form.

Years ago, the province was home to so many tamaraws but as the environment changed—and as humans interrupted the tamaraws’ territory—the species started to decrease and soon became one of the Philippines’ critically endangered species.

According to the survey of the Mindoro Biodiversity Conservation Foundation Inc. (MBCFI), a tamaraw was last seen on Mt. Calavite in 1992. And in 2019, after 27 years, the elusive tamaraw was seen again at Mt. Calavite Wildlife Sanctuary (MCWS) in Paluan town.

How to get to Tamaraw Falls

view of tamaraw falls from the main road

As mentioned above, the Tamaraw Waterfalls is easily accessible as it is beside the main road in Barangay Villaflor. To see it up close, it will take you about 30 to 45 minutes.

By commute

From Manila, take the Batangas-bound buses to the Batangas City pier. From there, ride the super ferry boats bound for Calapan or those bound for Puerto Galera. Once you arrive at Calapan, there are jeepneys and vans plying the capital from the neighboring towns. Tell the driver to drop you to Tamaraw Falls.

You may also rent a tricycle going to the falls. This is a better option for those who are not in a rush or have a flexible time. The driver can also do stopovers at other tourist sites you’ll pass through along the way.

By private car

From Manila, go to Batangas City Pier and opt for the RORO ferry bound for Calapan so you can bring your car to Puerto Galera. You can drive from Calapan to Tamaraw Falls for about 45 minutes.

This peaceful place is full of rocks that get very slippery in the rain, so it’s best to travel here during the summer.

7. Bulalacao

Every Puerto Galera visitor should visit the charming village to witness Mangyans’ (Mindoro’s indegenous people) way of life, beautiful weaves, and the culture that has persisted through time. You can also witness and participate in their weaving tradition. You can even have a chance to take home souvenirs such as baskets that are crafted by local artisans. By visiting this village, you will be supporting this indigenous group’s cultural preservation and economic sustainability.

Seemingly hidden away from the rest of the world, Mangyan Village is an extraordinary look at a culture so different from the modern city. It’s like walking in history. Having been built to protect the Iraya-Mangyan tribe and their customs, the people here live life like they’re in a different era. The best part is there’s no entrance fee! You can purchase handicrafts and trinkets from the village people, if you wish. They are made to show off traditional Mangyan culture, by some of the last Mangyan craftsmen and women in the world.

4. Veranda Restaurant

Whether you’re looking for that authentic Filipino taste, or something a little more similar to what you would eat back home, Puerto Galera has some pretty good dining options.

That Authentic Filipino taste can be found at the Veranda Restaurant. Located in the Out of the Blue Resort, customers consistently say they would return again and again. The service is brilliant, and the food is cooked to perfection. Expect a lot of seafood. You’ll also find vegan friendly options here, if you need them.

Alternatively, if you’re in the Talipanan Beach area and looking for some delicious pizzas, then Lukas Bar is probably the best place for you. It’s cheap, tasty, and has a view of the beach.

Manila to Puerto Galera

The cheapest and usual way to reach Puerto Galera from Manila is via Batangas. From Batangas Pier, you will need to ride a ferry to either of the two ports in Puerto Galera. Balatero Port is closer to White Beach and Aninuan Beach, while Muelle Port is closer to Sabang. Manila to Puerto Galera takes about 3 to 4 hours.

Don’t worry about your planned Puerto Galera budget because the bus and ferry tickets are not that expensive unlike going to other provinces.

If you’re looking for Puerto Galera hotels, there’s a variety to choose from, from high-ends to budget. ZEN Rooms offers Puerto Galera hotels starting from P700/night perfect for backpackers, budget and solo travelers!
