Quezon Memorial Circle History

The Quezon City Circle we know of today isn’t actually it was supposed to be. In 1941, the plan for the oval was supposed to be the location of a proposed Capitol building for the Philippine Legislature. While in the 1949 plan, a big building was proposed to be built there to house the three branches of the Philippine government (legislative, executive, and judicial). The oval would be part of the Executive Center, which would also include parts of land on both sides of the park.
In 1951, a national contest for the Quezon Memorial Project was held., and Filipino architect Federico S. Ilustre’s design won. Aside from the Quezon Memorial Monument itself, a complex of three buildings, including a presidential library, a museum, and a theater, were also planned to be erected.
Quezon City Circle construction started from 1952 to 1978. After the monument was completed, President Quezon’s remains were transferred there. It was during that time that by virtue of a presidential decree, former dictator Ferdinand Marcos mandated the site as a National Shrine. The National Historical Institute (NHI) manages, and has authority, over the monument, while the Quezon City government administers the park.
Now, visitors can already enjoy walking leisurely or continue their fitness journey by jogging or biking at Quezon City Circle. You can also see the Quezon Memorial Monument erected in honor of President Manuel L. Quezon, from whom the city took its name.
