Budget hotels in Surabaya

Surabaya is more of a business area than a particularly touristy hotspot, but this just means that you’ll have to put in that extra little bit of effort to find what the city truly has to offer. Beneath its business-like exterior, Surabaya offers some interesting history and a side of Indonesia you’re likely to miss if you don’t pay attention.

Main attractions in Surabaya

Head to "old Surabaya" and visit the House of Sampoerna, where you’ll find a compound built during the Dutch-colonial period. The best place to see the history behind this city. You can also drop in at the Ciputra Waterpark and take a dip in the water. It has a wave pool, slides and many other water-themed rides to have a go on. There is also Surabaya Zoo, one of Southeast Asia’s oldest and largest. It’s only 3km from the city center. The Royal Plaza, a mid-range shopping center, is a good place to stop off and have a few drinks and a meal with friends. Marina Plaza is another option, if you’re looking for somewhere to eat or go shopping.

Neighbourhoods in Surabaya

If you’re feeling a bit hungry, head to Karang Pilang, where you’ll find some great restaurants. Try to stop by the Restoran Alami, if you get the chance. Alternatively, if you’re looking to relax, head to Kenjeran where you’ll find the Temple of Heaven and the city’s best beach for viewing the sunrise. You can then head over to Paka, where you’re bound to see Pasopati, an old Russian submarine commissioned in 1962 into the Indonesian navy, sat on the newly renovated waterside. If you’re looking to pick up some souvenirs, head to the Genteng Neighbourhood and stop by the Pasar Genteng to see a distinctly Indonesian market. Finally, to finish the day, Wonokromo is a great place to spend the night. Head to Colors, one of the city’s most famous clubs, for a great night out.
